The Regal Cinemas
Regal is a word that may be associated with the following concepts:
The first of its kind in the country, the Regal Theater was an entertainment mecca for Chicago's affluent Black community. Many celebrated jazz and Blues artists played here including Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, Lena Horne, B.B. King, Ella Fitzgerald and others. Many popular films were shown as well, such as Stanley Laurel and Oliver Hardy's 1933 film The Devil's Brother. Classics such as Twelve O'Clock High, The Sound of Music and Titanic were also a hit at the Regal.
Regal was founded in 1976 by Mother Lily Monteverde and her husband Remy as a distributor of foreign films like That Man from Istanbul, Marsha and All Mine to Give. It was then that Mother Lily decided to produce a local movie which became a big hit in the cinemas, Kayod sa Umaga, Kayod sa Gabi. This was followed by other films starring the top Filipino stars at that time like Sheryl Cruz, Snooky Serna and Gabby Concepcion.
In the mid 1980s, Regal expanded to television, producing a variety of drama and comedy series for both GMA and ABS-CBN. These include Regal Shocker for TV5 and its reboot 10 years later, Gen Z, and Mano Po Legacy (a non-Sine Novela based on the same name by Maricel Soriano). Regal also co-produced mother studio present for GMA network as well as the short-lived Regal Drama Special for ABS-CBN that featured recurring guest artists from its Regal film stable.
When Regal was sold in 1998, it was bought by investment firms Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Hicks Muse Tate & Furst with plans to merge it with United Artists, using the Regal Cinemas name. This was a successful strategy and allowed Regal to become a genuine industry behemoth under the management of the highly skilled veteran businessman Anschutz.
In the early 2000s, Regal began to add a little bit of flair to its brand by introducing its first luxury auditoriums called Regal XD. These were the largest screens in America and offered an enhanced viewing experience that included a state-of-the-art audio system that delivered surround-sound. These XD locations are still in operation today and continue to be a huge success for the chain.
Regal also offers a suite of sales and marketing tools built for high-velocity sales, such as a texting app that can increase conversions, an AI chatbot that can answer customer questions, and an in-app reporting dashboard that provides actionable data in real-time.
